Accessing Your Super Fund for Dental Implants
If you're living with ongoing dental pain or struggling to eat, speak or sleep comfortably, we understand how much that can impact your everyday life. At Mulgrave Dental Group, we believe that essential dental care should be accessible - especially when it's needed to relieve pain or support your health and wellbeing.
That’s why we’re here to help eligible patients explore the option of accessing their superannuation early through the ATO’s Compassionate Release of Superannuation program.
Who is Eligible?
You may be able to apply for early access to your super if both of the following criteria are met:
- You or a dependent require dental treatment that is needed to:
- Alleviate acute or chronic pain, or
- Alleviate a mental health condition that is caused or made worse by dental issues.
- The required treatment is not readily available through the public health system.

FAQs
The ATO’s Early Super Release program takes the financial strain out of accessing high-quality dental care. But, it’s not available for everyone.
Early Super Release allows you to access a portion of your superannuation funds on compassionate grounds to cover the cost of essential dental treatments, such as dental implants - if you meet certain eligibility criteria.
Early access to your super can only be approved for dental treatment that qualifies as medical treatment - not cosmetic. To be eligible, the treatment must meet both of the following conditions:
- You or your dependant need the treatment to:
- Treat a life-threatening illness or injury
- Alleviate acute or chronic pain
- Alleviate acute or chronic mental illness
- The treatment is not readily available through the public health system.
If you’ve borrowed money to cover treatment costs, additional criteria will apply to the borrowed amount.
You can read more about eligible medical expenses on the ATO website here: ATO: Expenses eligible for release on compassionate grounds
To be eligible for Early Super Release on compassionate grounds, you must meet certain medical and financial criteria, for example the inability to pay for severe dental issues that significantly affect your quality of life. Our team can guide you through the application process to determine if you qualify.
You will need to apply through the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). We can help with your application process, guiding you on the eligibility criteria and necessary documentation to streamline your approval.
The amount you can access via Early Super Release depends on your individual super balance and the cost of treatment. One of the first steps to applying is getting a detailed treatment plan that outlines expected costs (which we can provide for you).
No, the procedure remains the same. Whether you access your super early or not, you’ll still receive high-quality implant treatment - using an Early Super Release helps to make the procedure more affordable, reducing financial stress.
Approval times can vary. On average, it typically takes a few weeks to process an Early Super Release application. We recommend starting the application as soon as possible to avoid delays in your treatment plan.
