What Are Wisdom Teeth?
Your wisdom teeth (also known as the third set of molars) are located in the very back of your mouth. Generally, they start to come through between the ages of 18-23. That is why they are called ‘wisdom’ teeth – they are associated with young people growing up!
But the thing is, your jaw stops developing sooner than your teeth. This means there’s often not enough room for your new wisdom teeth to fully surface. When this occurs, they can come in at a wrong angle or fail to break through the gum at all. This problem is called ‘impaction’. Impaction isn’t usually something you can ignore as it often leads to other oral health issues – not to mention discomfort.
So what can you do about impacted wisdom teeth? The removal process is fairly straightforward, with treatment and recovery often over within a matter of days. We’ve had many patients turn to our friendly team to get their wisdom teeth removed with minimal discomfort or complications.
Signs Your Wisdom Teeth May Need to be Removed
The common symptoms indicating that you have may need your wisdom teeth removed include:
- Reddened or inflamed gum alongside the tooth
- Pus coming from the gum line
- Swollen or tender lymph nodes under the jaw
- Difficulty opening your mouth fully or swallowing
- Swelling of the gums and mouth
- Discomfort in the area around your wisdom teeth
- Regular fevers
If you are experiencing these symptoms, it is best not to ignore it as they may cause more serious issues. Get expert help assessing the condition of your wisdom teeth and check if they need to be removed. Contact the Mulgrave Dental Group team today on 03 9562 5156.

Our Wisdom Teeth Removal Process
Rest assured, the wisdom teeth removal process is more straightforward than it used to be. We understand surgery can be daunting. That’s why we take extra care to explain each step and answer all your questions—ensuring your comfort from consultation to recovery.
We understand that wisdom teeth removal can make some people feel anxious. Our expert dentistry team has years of rigorous training in wisdom teeth removal. They will discuss your symptoms, dental history, and take you through the treatment during this initial consultation.
You will be given an OPG x-ray during your consultation. The dentist can then accurately diagnose impacted wisdom teeth. This ensures we get all the answers upfront so we can recommend the best treatment for you. Our dentists have seen it all, so you will be in some of the best hands in the industry.
On the day of your wisdom teeth removal, you’ll have the option of undergoing sedation or general anaesthesia. Most patients prefer to be unaware of the procedure taking place, and so choose general anaesthesia. Your dentist will discuss the best anaesthesia option for you on the day. You will also be given medication to minimise discomfort and swelling of your gums and mouth after the operation.
Wisdom teeth removal surgery typically takes about an hour. However, we recommend that you plan to spend around an hour and a half to two hours at our dental office. This gives us time to chat beforehand about what to expect from the treatment and aftercare at home. We can also ease your nerves and answer your questions.
Before leaving, your dentist will go over your detailed post-operative care instructions again, to ensure a smooth recovery process. Follow these steps and, with no complications, you will be back to normal with a few short days of rest!

Wisdom Teeth Removal FAQs
Have concerns or queries about the wisdom teeth removal process? Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about wisdom teeth discomfort and the treatment process.
Some people do not have enough room along their jawline to develop all of their adult teeth. Since your wisdom teeth develop last, there may not be space for them to break through your gum. This is when they are ‘impacted’. There are various types of wisdom teeth impactions:
- Mesial impaction: This is the most common issue with wisdom teeth. This means your wisdom teeth are developing but angled toward the front of your mouth.
- Distal impaction: This is a much rarer issue. In this case, your wisdom teeth are developing but are instead angled toward the back of your mouth.
- Vertical impaction: This is when your wisdom teeth are in the right position and developing correctly, but they cannot break through the gum without discomfort.
- Horizontal impaction: This is when your wisdom teeth are lying completely on the side, trapped under the gums. Horizontally impacted wisdom teeth are often more uncomfortable. This is because they put pressure on the teeth to the side of them, as well as irritating the gum.
You can feel the discomfort of impacted wisdom teeth in several ways. The most common issues include gum inflammation alongside the affected tooth. In some cases, pus can also ooze from the gum, leaving a bad taste in your mouth and bad breath. Some people also get swollen or painful lymph nodes. This pain can make it difficult to open your mouth fully or swallow. Problems with your wisdom teeth can also cause general swelling in your mouth and jaw, and persistent fevers.
If left untreated, wisdom teeth impactions can have lasting negative effects on your oral health and later in life. This can include causing infections and inflammation, grinding or chipping your other teeth (leading to cavities), and misaligning your bite and teeth.
In a consultation, you can see what your treatment options are. If your wisdom teeth are likely to cause you problems, we can resolve the issue quickly and effectively.
This is a tricky question to answer because it all depends on your unique needs and dental conditions. No two wisdom teeth removal treatments will be the same.
The consultation will take around an hour, while the procedure may take an hour and a half to two hours. This timeline can be longer depending on the complexity of the procedure and what is needed to best treat you. We’ll chat about all of this during your initial consultation, so you know what to expect.
It’s totally okay to feel nervous before any dental procedure. That’s why our team is here to ensure all your concerns are addressed. During your initial consultation, if you’re worried about anything just speak up. It can be easier to overcome your fears if you understand what is going to happen!
If your anxiety is holding you back from seeking treatment, don’t worry. Wisdom teeth removal is often done under general anaesthetic. This means you will not be conscious during the procedure. You will be sent to sleep and wake up with the hardest part done and no memory of the treatment.
It’s normal to experience some discomfort in the days after your wisdom teeth removal, same as any minor procedure. Most patients will start feeling normal again after about three to five days. It’s important to follow the aftercare instructions given to you by your dentist. This will go a long way in ensuring that you are as comfortable as possible and healing properly.
We can schedule a follow-up appointment a few days after your procedure to check on you. We will check in with you to see you are recovering well and answer any questions about your aftercare.

Our Reviews
Thousands of happy patients have already visited Mulgrave Dental Group and come out raving about our high-quality service and friendly people.
I don’t think I have come across a dentist that was so diligent, supportive and caring. The whole team were an absolute delight to deal with. They even managed to squeeze me in for a last moment appointment and I am not an existing patient of theirs. They were very transparent with all my options available and prices for certain procedures.
I live over 2 hours away from this dental practice but I think I will continue to see them in the future.
