What Are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers are thin, custom-made shells crafted from tooth-coloured materials, such as porcelain, that are placed over the front surface of teeth to change their colour, shape and appearance.
Veneers may be considered for a range of cosmetic dental concerns, including:
- Gaps between teeth
- Cracked or chipped teeth
- Uneven or misaligned teeth
- Worn teeth
- Stained, discoloured or translucent teeth
At Mulgrave Dental Group, our dentists can assess your individual needs and discuss whether veneers may be a suitable treatment option for you. Treatment plans, timelines and outcomes vary between individuals.
What Are Dental Veneers Made Of?
Dental veneers can be made from different materials, including porcelain and composite resin. Each material has different characteristics that may influence its appearance, durability, maintenance requirements and cost.
Porcelain veneers can be designed to reflect the colour and translucency of natural teeth, while composite resin may offer an alternative option depending on your individual needs and treatment goals.
At Mulgrave Dental Group, our veneers are planned and crafted in collaboration with our in-house dental laboratory using selected dental materials and laboratory technology. Your dentist will discuss the available options, including the benefits, limitations, risks and expected longevity of each material, to help determine what may be suitable for you.

What Happens During a Smile Consultation?
At Mulgrave Dental Group, a Smile Consultation is our chance to talk to you about your goals, and work out a plan personalised to you.
What happens during the Smile Consultation
Our Dental Veneers Process
It’s important that you feel fully comfortable talking to us during your treatment process, which makes open communication essential. If at any point during your appointment you feel nervous, uncertain or just want to ask a question, please don’t hesitate - we’re here for you.
Your veneer treatment begins with a discussion about your goals and needs. From there, your dentist will develop a personalised treatment plan based on your teeth, oral health and desired outcome.
We’ll scan your teeth using 3D imaging technology, take photographs and, where required, take impressions. This information is then used by our dental laboratory technicians to help design and create your veneers.
Next is your Smile Trial, where your dentist can discuss different veneer shapes, shades and design options with you as part of the treatment planning process.
A temporary veneer trial may then be used so you can assess the proposed shape, appearance and feel before your final veneers are made. This also gives you an opportunity to provide feedback and raise any questions or concerns with your dentist.
If something doesn’t feel or look right during the trial, let your dental team know so it can be discussed before progressing with your final veneers.
Between your Smile Trial and your fitting appointment, our ceramist and dental laboratory team will work on crafting your personalised veneers based on the agreed design.
When your veneers are ready, you’ll return to the practice for your fitting appointment. Your temporary veneers will be removed and your final veneers will be assessed for fit, shape and appearance.
You’ll have an opportunity to review the proposed result and discuss any questions or concerns with your dentist before the veneers are bonded to your teeth using dental cement.

What Do Dental Veneers Cost?
The cost of veneers in Australia can vary depending on a few factors, such as the material used and the number of veneers required. Generally you’ll need enough veneers to completely cover your smile line, and a common smile line comprises six teeth (though wider smiles may encompass eight or more teeth).
During your initial consultation, our friendly cosmetic dentistry team will provide you with a detailed estimate of the cost based on your specific treatment needs.
Dental Veneers FAQs
Dental veneers are an investment in a smile you can be proud of, and we want to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible with the process. To help, we’ve answered a few common questions below.
Dental veneers may be an option for people looking to change the colour, shape, size or appearance of their teeth.
Whether veneers are suitable for you will depend on factors such as your oral health, the condition of your teeth and your treatment goals. Your dentist can discuss the potential benefits, risks and alternative treatment options with you before you decide.
Whether veneers or crowns are more appropriate will depend on the condition of your teeth and your individual treatment needs.
Veneers are primarily used to change the appearance of the visible surface of a tooth, while crowns cover more of the tooth and may be considered where greater restoration is required. Your dentist can assess your teeth and discuss which options may be appropriate for you.
As part of the treatment planning process, your dentist may discuss proposed veneer shapes, shades and other design options with you.
In some cases, a temporary trial or mock-up may also be used to help you assess the proposed shape and appearance before the final veneers are made. Any preview or trial is indicative only and does not guarantee the final treatment outcome.
The type of veneers that may be appropriate for you will depend on your individual needs, treatment goals and budget.
Porcelain and composite resin veneers are different treatment options, and each has its own considerations. Your dentist can explain the differences in appearance, treatment process, costs and potential risks during your consultation, so you can make an informed decision about which option may be suitable for you.
Dental veneers are an established cosmetic dental treatment, but like all dental procedures, they involve potential risks and considerations.
Your dentist can explain the potential benefits, risks and alternative treatment options before treatment begins.
It is possible for your teeth or mouth to feel different following veneer treatment, particularly while you adjust to changes in the shape or surface of your teeth.
Individual experiences vary, and your dentist can explain what you may expect following treatment, including any aftercare or adjustment period.
