    What Causes A Gummy Smile?

    A gummy smile is the result of a few possible factors, mainly to do with the development of the mouth. It’s not an indication that something is ‘wrong’, so much as it’s just a different way the teeth and gums have grown. 

    Understanding your own underlying cause will be crucial in helping us determine how to apply appropriate treatment, and it’s one of the first things we’ll talk to you about during your consultation.

    The amount and position of gum tissue can influence how much of the teeth are visible when you smile. In some people, the gum tissue extends further over the teeth, which can make the teeth appear shorter and the gum line more noticeable.

    Depending on the underlying cause, treatment options may be available to change the position or shape of the gum line and reveal more of the natural tooth surface. Your dentist can assess your smile and discuss whether treatment may be suitable for you.

    When someone’s upper lip is relatively short in length, it may not fully cover the gum line when smiling, resulting in the exposure of a larger portion of the gums.

     

    Sometimes, a person’s lip muscles are just too strong. Here, they’re called hyperactive or hypermobile muscles, and they can make a person’s upper lip lift higher than normal, revealing more of the gums and causing a gummy smile.

    Some dental abnormalities can contribute to a gummy smile, for example irregular tooth eruption, improper tooth development or an uneven gum line. In many of these causes, it can cause the teeth to have an uneven appearance, or to be covered over by excess gums.
