Learn More About Getting a Dental X-Ray in Melbourne
Dental X-rays are a very normal part of almost all general, cosmetic and orthodontic dental treatment. They are considered very safe and are widely used by the global dental community, helping us to uncover hidden oral health issues that can’t be seen by eye.

What are Dental X-Rays?
Dental X-rays are one of the most common tools that we use here at Mulgrave Dental Group - in fact, we use them each and every day. Digital X-rays help us to capture detailed images of your teeth, jaw and surrounding tissue, showing us the hidden underlying structures that we need to see to spot problems developing out of sight.
So what might we spot on a dental X-ray? A few common examples include:
- Cavities or decay
- Damage
- Unerupted teeth
- Problems with wisdom teeth
- Infection and abscesses
- Early signs of cancer
- Tooth development in children
Spotting each of these on an X-ray allows us to develop a custom treatment plan that addresses any concerns and lets us intervene early in problems before they get worse.

Our Dental X-Ray Process
Our dental X-ray process is quick, safe, and crucial for diagnosing and monitoring your oral health. We use the latest technology to capture clear images, allowing us to detect any issues that may not be visible during a regular exam. Our team will explain each step to ensure you feel comfortable and confident throughout the process.
Getting a dental X-ray is quick, simple and painless. Your dentist will ensure you’re sitting comfortably and will position the X-ray machine (which is usually on a big arm) to carefully align it with the target area. All you need to do is relax.
Next, your dentist will capture the X-ray images, asking you to hold still for a brief moment while the machine is activated. You will likely hear a brief buzzing sound, and feel nothing at all.
Modern dental X-rays are done entirely digitally, so there’s no film to develop. The images will be able to view almost immediately, and our team can show you if you’d like to see what’s under the surface of your mouth. From here, your treatment will vary based on the findings.
Are Dental X-rays Safe?
The good news is that dental X-rays are considered very safe - even for children. You see, while X-rays do use radiation to reveal those hidden structures in your mouth, the dose is so low that the risk of any complications is extremely minimal.
Dental X-rays are approved by both the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) and the Australian Dental Association (ADA). In fact, you’d be exposed to more radiation on a flight from Melbourne to Perth than you would in a digital X-ray at our dental clinic.

Types of Dental X-Rays
While dental X-rays all fundamentally do the same thing (take images which let your dentist look under the surface of your mouth), they do this in a few different ways. During your appointment, your dentist will generally recommend one of a few types of X-ray to get the right images for your treatment.

Basic X-Rays
Basic X-rays take a snapshot of one half of your face at a time (either your upper or lower teeth, or the left or right side), providing an essential overview of what’s going on under the surface. This is a fast process, and usually included as a part of a regular dental check-up.

Panoramic X-Rays
Panoramic X-rays provide a more comprehensive view of your entire oral structure, taking a photo of your entire mouth at once - including your upper and lower teeth, jaw joints, nerves, sinuses and bone structure. These are often used to diagnose more complex issues.

Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT)
This is a special type of equipment used when regular dental X-rays aren’t sufficient. It produces a highly detailed 3D image of your teeth, soft tissue, nerves and bone structure, which can be used for surgical planning and other complex diagnostics.
What Does a Dental X-Ray Cost?
Financing Options for Dental X-Rays
We accept a variety of payment methods for dental X-rays and offer a number of interest-free payment plans to help make it easy to invest in your oral wellbeing.
We offer a variety of flexible payment plans for dental treatment, including X-rays. Here you can spread out the cost of your appointment, paying in simple, manageable monthly instalments. We offer both zero- and low-interest options, depending on your budget.
Financing programs are also available at Mulgrave Dental Group, allowing you to finance the cost of a dental X-ray through reputable third-party financing companies. These programs often provide competitive rates and flexible repayment terms, simplifying the management of your appointment costs.
Dental insurance plans sometimes cover a range of treatment options, including dental X-rays. If you’re not sure what your insurance will cover, chat with us during your appointment and we’ll help walk you through it.

Reasons You Might Need a Dental X-Ray
During your regular dental check-up or over the course of alternative treatment, your dentist may recommend taking a series of X-ray images for a few reasons.
Your dentist may recommend an X-ray to get a better look at what’s going on inside your teeth, joints and bones. This can play a pivotal role in identifying developing problems, like cavities, infection, unerupted teeth, bone loss and more.
Gaining a comprehensive view of your mouth will allow your dentist to plan more effective, personalised care. Instead of treating only your current needs, they will be able to suggest treatment for your future needs as well.
One of the best ways to treat (and prevent) oral health issues is to spot them developing and intervene before they become a problem. X-rays are a core part of this strategy, enabling your dentist to monitor changes in your mouth over time - looking for early warning signs.
Dental X-Ray FAQs
We understand that dental X-rays are a concern for some, so we’ve taken time to answer a few common questions below regarding their safety and efficacy. If you have any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to bring them up during your appointment.
No, dental X-rays are entirely painless. The process involves little more than sitting in a chair, or putting your head next to a machine, and then staying still for a short period of time. You will generally experience zero discomfort, and your dentist will be right there to help you throughout the procedure.
Yes, dental X-rays have been found safe to take during pregnancy. However, to maximise safety and reduce any possible risk, it’s likely you’ll be asked to wear a protective apron to minimise exposure to your abdomen.
Of course, your comfort is our number one priority and we’re here for your needs. You absolutely have the right to refuse a dental X-ray if this is a concern for you - we will never force you into any procedure that you aren’t comfortable with.
If you do have concerns prior to your procedure and aren’t willing to undergo an X-ray until you’ve discussed those concerns, please talk to your dentist and they will be able to walk you through everything you need to know.
This entirely depends on your unique needs, and the condition of your oral health. For most patients, we will take an X-ray once or twice a year along with their regular dental check-up appointment.

Our Reviews
Thousands of happy patients have already visited Mulgrave Dental Group and come out raving about our high-quality service and friendly people.
I started going to Mulgrave Dental Group earlier in the year after reading their amazing reviews. It is the first time I have been really happy with a dentist. All staff are extremely friendly, warm and kind. The receptionists make you feel welcome as soon as you enter the door. Dr. Diluni and all the dental nurses I have seen have taken the time to explain everything thoroughly, and provide helpful treatment information. I used to dread going to the dentist and for the first time I can say I no longer do!

It’s rare that a dental X-ray will be performed on its own. Typically, X-rays are used to diagnose problems and help your dentist to provide better, more targeted treatment as a part of your regular dental check-up.

Dental Check-Up
A regular dental check-up is essential for the long-term care of your oral health. By visiting the dentist at least once a year, if not more frequently, your dentist will be able to spot problems before they develop - and intervene.

Scale & Clean
Scaling and cleaning, aka dental cleaning, is the use of specialist dental hygiene tools to thoroughly clean plaque and tartar from your mouth which you can’t tackle at home.

Wisdom Teeth Removal
Unfortunately, wisdom teeth do not always come in correctly. In any case where they erupt at the wrong angle and risk damage to their neighbouring teeth and cheeks, or cause any other problem, they may need to be removed.
