Protect Your Teeth with Fissure Sealant Treatment in Melbourne

In the fight against tooth decay, prevention is almost always better than treating a problem once it has gotten worse. Fissure sealants are one of our most common preventative treatment options, and a very popular way to seal teeth from harm, particularly in younger people.

    What Are Fissure Sealants?

Fighting tooth decay? Fissure sealants are a quick, non-invasive and pain-free dental treatment option which can be used to both treat and prevent further harm.

In fact, the name says exactly what the procedure involves - a thin, protective seal is applied over the chewing surfaces (fissures) of your back teeth, forming a barrier against cavity-causing bacteria. The grooves and pits which form these surfaces can be a haven for food particles, which get trapped and contribute to bacterial growth. Over time, this bacteria can cause damage and decay, which if left untreated often goes on to create more serious problems.

Fissure sealants cover over these vulnerable areas and proactively shield your teeth from harm. This can help to minimise the need for more invasive dental treatment in future, making it an excellent early intervention tool.

    Our Fissure Sealant Process

This quick and painless procedure provides an extra layer of protection, especially for young patients or those with harder-to-clean areas. We’ll ensure you’re comfortable and informed throughout the process, making it easy to maintain strong, healthy teeth.

Fissure sealants are an extremely common dental treatment, and the first step to getting one is a comprehensive examination.

We’ll start by checking your teeth over for signs of problems, focusing mainly on your back teeth. In particular we’ll be hunting for especially deep fissures which we think may cause problems in future, and which could benefit from the application of a sealant. Remember, it’s generally better to prevent an issue than to treat it once it has begun!

Next, we’ll gently clean the selected teeth to ensure they’re free from debris, plaque and tartar. We’ll also dry the teeth and isolate them with cotton or a dental dam, keeping them dry for the procedure. This will be relatively quick, and all you need to do is sit back and relax.

Now for the procedure itself, which only takes a few minutes. A gentle etching gel will be applied to the chewing surfaces of the chosen teeth, which will slightly roughen their texture, making it easier to adhere a sealant to them. Don’t worry, you won’t feel any pain during this step.

Our dental experts can then apply the liquid sealant material to the fissures and grooves of the chosen teeth. This resin-like material will flow into all the contours and harden, forming a strong protective barrier. In some instances, we’ll use a specialised light to hasten the curing process so we can move forwards.

When the sealant fully hardens, your dentist will assess its placement and check how it feels, ensuring your bite remains unaffected.

    What Do Fissure Sealants Cost?

The cost of fissure sealants in Australia can vary depending on a few factors, such as the number of teeth being sealed and any extra cleaning or complexity required to prepare for the procedure. During your initial consultation, our friendly dentistry team will provide you with a detailed estimate of the cost based on your specific treatment needs.

Who Should Get a Fissure Sealant?

This is a simple, cost-effective treatment option for preventing decay at almost any age. If we notice that you have particularly deep fissures, or a history of tooth decay, we may recommend sealing at-risk teeth. Of course, you’re always welcome to ask if we think it’s right for you!

Fissure sealants are a common preventative treatment option during the development phases of someone’s life, and therefore help shape their oral health habits. They can help to prevent decay during those crucial formative years, reducing the risk of more serious damage.

You’re never too old to get on top of your oral health! Even if decay has already emerged, sealant can be applied to adjacent teeth to prevent the decay from spreading.

In some cases, we may recommend early application of sealant as soon as your child’s permanent molars or premolars have erupted. This is a proactive measure, helping to ensure those new teeth are shielded while your child may still be learning good brushing habits.

Fissure sealants can also protect teeth at risk of damage from erosion. Certain daily habits, like chewing on pencils or the regular consumption of sugary, acidic foods, increase the risk of cracking the chewing surfaces of your teeth, leaving them vulnerable to decay. Sealing these cracks can help to halt the damage before it gets worse.

    Fissure Sealant FAQs

Don’t let worry hold you back from getting the dental treatment you need. To help you fully understand what a fissure sealant involves, we’ve answered some additional common questions below.

No, fissure sealants are not painful at all.

The procedure is very quick and non-invasive, and typically requires no local anaesthesia - you won’t need it because there’s nothing really to feel! Patients usually find the procedure comfortable and painless

Compared to other dental treatment options, fissure sealants are a relatively small investment that can last a very long time. We generally expect a sealant to last around five to 10 years, though their longevity can vary based on factors such as your oral hygiene and chewing habits.

We recommend regular dental check-ups at least once or twice a year to allow our team to monitor the condition of your sealants (and broader oral health), plus make any necessary touch-ups or replacements.

While this depends on the teeth and their condition, not usually.

Fissure sealants are a preventative measure which is most effective when applied to healthy teeth with intact enamel. They’re not typically suitable for teeth which have already decayed, or become damaged beyond very minor cracks. In these cases, our team may recommend more appropriate treatments such as fillings, dental bonding or crowns, which would better address the issue.

Absolutely, adults can benefit from fissure sealants as much as anyone else. While this treatment is most commonly associated with children’s dental care, adults with deep fissures or a high risk of decay, and who haven’t had this treatment before, may find their dentist recommends it to ensure the long-term safety of their teeth.

Yes, fissure sealants are entirely reversible - and can be replaced or renewed if needed. Over time, sealant may wear down or become damaged, just like the surfaces of your teeth themselves. If your dentist notices that a sealant is nearing the end of its life, they may gently remove the old material and replace it with new sealant to continue to provide protection against decay.

Fissure sealants are widely considered both safe and effective for use in people of all age groups. While they can become chipped or damaged over time, it’s relatively simple to remove old sealant and replace it, and it will not generally affect your bite.

You can typically eat normally after getting a fissure sealant, though your dentist may recommend that you wait at least 30 minutes to make sure it has had time to fully harden. It’s also considered a good idea to avoid particularly hard or sticky foods in the first 24 hours, just in case anything dislodges the new sealant by accident.

Every individual is different, so it’s tricky to say whether fissure sealants are ‘necessary’ for everyone. That said, it’s a very common preventative dental treatment option for a few reasons:

    • It’s an easy win in the fight against tooth decay, helping to seal tight nooks and crannies against bacterial growth and blocking decay before it can start.
    • It offers targeted protection for vulnerable areas, especially in children and teenagers who are still developing their oral hygiene habits.
    • It’s highly cost effective compared to other more expensive, more invasive treatment options. In some cases, fissure sealants can entirely prevent the need for fillings or more extensive repair work.

If you aren’t sure whether a fissure sealant is necessary for you, talk to our friendly team here on Wanda Street, Mulgrave and we’ll help create a plan tailored to your mouth.

Dental fillings are a common treatment option for sealing cracks, treating decay and preventing sensitivity. Unlike crowns or veneers, which sit on top of the tooth, fillings go inside the cracks or holes, ‘filling’ them.
