What is Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment, often just called a ‘root canal’, is all about saving your natural teeth.
If at all possible, we strive to ensure the health and longevity of your adult teeth, prioritising repair and treatment over extractions and replacement where possible. A root canal is one of the best tools in our arsenal to keep a tooth going even after severe internal decay.
When you get root canal treatment at Mulgrave Dental Group, our experts will carefully remove the diseased or damaged pulp of your affected tooth, clean the inside of it, then fill the space and seal up the gap. This process is designed to eliminate pain and discomfort associated with tooth decay, and helps to stop the infection from spreading - saving the tooth, and its neighbours.
One of the great things about a root canal is that it works as both great care and prevention, sterilising the current tooth and preventing future harm.
How to Know if You Need a Root Canal
We use root canal treatment to tackle severe tooth decay which has affected the inner pulp of your teeth.
When this pulp becomes infected or inflamed, you may experience a number of uncomfortable or painful symptoms - which are signs your body is telling you it needs some expert help. These symptoms vary from person to person, so if you’re worried at all the best person to consult is your dentist. Common symptoms include:
Severe Toothache
Tooth Sensitivity
Swelling & Tenderness
Discolouration
Abscess
Bad Breath

Our Root Canal Treatment Process
Our root canal treatment is designed to relieve pain and save your natural tooth. We remove infected or damaged tissue, clean the area, and seal it to prevent further issues. Our team will guide you through each step, ensuring you’re comfortable and informed for a healthy, pain-free smile.
Saving your tooth starts with a simple consultation and examination. We’ll chat to you about your symptoms and take a look at what’s going on inside your mouth, using advanced digital X-rays to see what’s happening beneath the surface too. This will help us understand what treatment you need, and how to approach your root canal safely and efficiently.
The treatment itself is relatively simple, though it’ll take a few steps and we’ll numb the area to ensure you have a relaxed and pain-free experience.
The first step is to isolate and dry the affected tooth so there’s no saliva getting in the way, then we can access the inner pulp and clean it up, removing the infection entirely and sterilising what’s left. We’ll also prepare the tooth for the next step while we’re here.
With the tooth clean, sterile and prepped, we’ll fill the pulp canal with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha, which helps to reseal the tooth and give it stability. This material is then adhered into place so it stands the test of time and prevents infection from getting back in.
That’s essentially the treatment completed! At this point the infection has been sterilised and the damaged pulp replaced. Generally we recommend following up this procedure with the placement of a dental crown, which will help add another protective layer to prevent further harm in future.

Root Canal Treatment FAQs
Oral health can be a big investment, setting you up with a healthy smile that lasts for life. To help you fully understand how a root canal might work for you, we’ve answered some additional common questions below.
There is a common misconception that root canal treatment is quite painful, but in reality it’s like any other dental treatment. We always perform it under local anaesthesia so you should not feel any pain at all during the procedure. In fact, root canal treatment is designed to relieve pain as it directly addresses the cause of inflammation and infection near the sensitive nerves of your teeth.
Of course, like any medical treatment you may feel a few aches in the treated area after the procedure. This can usually be managed with simple over-the-counter pain medication, though we’ll talk to you about any aftercare recommendations during your appointment.
It’s normal to experience a degree of aches or discomfort after a root canal, just as you would after any minor surgical procedure. To make doubly certain that you feel happy and comfortable after your treatment we’ll also schedule a follow-up appointment - that way we can check that everything has healed nicely, and we can organise getting a crown fitted.
It’s very normal to feel a bit nervous before any dental procedure, and we’re here to ensure you have someone to talk to about any concerns. During your initial consultation, if you’re worried about something please don’t hesitate to ask - often one of the best ways to overcome nerves is to learn more about what happens next.
If your anxiety is holding you back from seeking the treatment you need, ask us about sleep dentistry and our other anti-anxiety techniques. Our team is very experienced at helping worried patients and we’ll strive to find a solution that works for you.
This is a tricky question to answer here on our website because it all depends on your unique needs. We treat every patient as an individual at Mulgrave Dental Group, which means every appointment is a bit different.
Generally speaking, we anticipate the procedure to take up to 60-90 minutes, though this depends on the severity of the infection, how many teeth we need to address, plus any other issues that require attention.
We’ll chat about all of this during your initial consultation so you know what to expect.
It’s common for dental insurance plans to cover necessary medical treatment, with root canals included. But, this all depends on your specific plan and what you’re covered for.
If you aren’t sure about your insurance, chat with our team when you come for your appointment and we’ll help you to understand where you are or aren’t covered.
This is a great question - prevention is always better than treating a problem once it’s gotten worse!
It might sound like a broken record but the best prevention in oral health really is good hygiene practices. That includes brushing and flossing regularly, avoiding too many sugary or acidic foods, and coming in once or twice a year for a dental check-up and professional clean.
Remember, catching issues early can often prevent the need for more intensive treatments like root canals.

Our Reviews
Thousands of happy patients have already visited Mulgrave Dental Group and come out raving about our high-quality service and friendly people.
I started going to Mulgrave Dental Group earlier in the year after reading their amazing reviews. It is the first time I have been really happy with a dentist. All staff are extremely friendly, warm and kind. The receptionists make you feel welcome as soon as you enter the door. Dr. Diluni and all the dental nurses I have seen have taken the time to explain everything thoroughly, and provide helpful treatment information. I used to dread going to the dentist and for the first time I can say I no longer do!

For me… someone who had a history of fear and dread when going to a dentist... Dr. Diluni and her wonderful staff changed this for me. The confidence and reassurance I have now is thanks to them and I am thrilled that I could undergo major dental surgery because of this trust.

Fantastic experience! I cannot recommend Mulgrave Dental highly enough. The experience from the beginning to the final appointment was very professional and the entire team made each and every visit a really positive experience. From someone who has always been pessimistic about dentists, I can say I have full trust and comfort in Dr. Diluni and the team. Well done & many thanks.

I can't say enough good things about Mulgrave Dental Group! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted warmly by their friendly staff. The clinic is immaculate and modern, which immediately put me at ease. For someone that has a phobia of going to the dentist they made it incredibly seamless and I left feeling confident in my smile and grateful for such exceptional dental care. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for top-notch dental services!

I would like to recommend Mulgrave Dental Group to everyone who is unsure or anxious about having dental work, as this is a very individual process. I have been dealing with these incredible professionals for almost a year and everyone has helped me feel comfortable from the moment I walked in. I’d like to say thank you.

I don’t think I have come across a dentist that was so diligent, supportive and caring. The whole team were an absolute delight to deal with. They even managed to squeeze me in for a last moment appointment and I am not an existing patient of theirs. They were very transparent with all my options available and prices for certain procedures.
I live over 2 hours away from this dental practice but I think I will continue to see them in the future.

Root Canal Risk Factors
Root canal treatment is generally preventable with good oral hygiene practices and early intervention. While it can happen to anyone if infection is left untreated, some patients are more at risk than others. Knowing your risk factors can help you understand if you need to come in and see us for a check-up more frequently.
One of the leading causes of tooth decay in Australia is poor oral hygiene. Good brushing and flossing habits help to remove food debris and bacteria from the mouth, so neglecting these habits gives plaque and tartar a space to build up - which can lead to decay and infection.
Certain lifestyle factors can contribute to a higher risk of tooth decay, leading to a higher risk of requiring root canal treatment. The commons ones are:
- Smoking
- Alcohol consumption
- High sugar or acid intake
Damage to teeth can leave cracks in the enamel, allowing bacteria to work its way inside to the pulp. This makes it all the more important to wear a dental mouthguard when playing sports, to get treated for bruxism if you grind your teeth at night, and to seek urgent care if you suffer an accident.
Certain hormonal changes in the body have been known to increase a person’s risk of gingivitis (gum disease) and related problems which can lead to infection.
As such, it is recommended that teenagers going through puberty and pregnant women get dental check-ups more regularly so an expert can help you stay on top of your oral health needs.
If any of your teeth don’t erupt properly - which is most common among wisdom teeth - this could create food and bacteria traps which increase the risk of infection.
Certain medical conditions and medications can increase the risk of gum disease, including:
- Diabetes
- Heart disease
- Osteoporosis
- Autoimmune diseases
- Medications which impact saliva production
If you’re worried you’re at risk, it usually always pays to talk to your GP or dentist.

Explore Alternatives to Root Canal Treatment
If we can catch your infection early we may have a few other options than jumping straight to a root canal - for example, applying a dental filling or just giving your teeth a good professional clean. During your consultation, we’ll let you know what your options are and recommend a course of action tailored to your needs.

Dental Fillings
Dental fillings are a common treatment option for sealing cracks, treating decay and preventing sensitivity. Unlike crowns or veneers, which sit on top of the tooth, fillings go inside the cracks or holes, ‘filling’ them.

Crowns
Dental crowns, also called dental caps, are porcelain prosthetics which can be installed over your entire tooth to help protect it from further damage and ensure its longevity.

Scale & Clean
Scaling and cleaning, aka dental cleaning, is the use of specialist dental hygiene tools to thoroughly clean plaque and tartar from your mouth which you can’t tackle at home.
